Foreground Growth for Cairn, part 2: Master Musicians and Celestial Scholars

These orders allow PCs to gain additional abilities and resources in a class-less and level-less system like Cairn. As a general rule, an order shares their secrets with a donation of 1000gp, or if they believe you align with their cause.

HORNED FLUTEBAG MASTERS
Cause: discover the melodies that reverberate through the soul

Digging through loot you found a horned flutebag. It's a magical instrument that can produce both sweet and terrible sounds (bulky, worth 150 gp). You need to use your mouth and both hands to play it, and sometimes one foot. Only 3 people in the world are known to play the flutebag, and each one can teach you a different song:

  • MASTER KARIN can teach you the Song of Rest:
Sang around a fire at night. The next morning, each listener removes 1 Fatigue or restores d4 total points in the Ability Scores of their choice.
  • MASTER WAGNER can teach you the Song of War:
The enemy makes a WIL Save or doesn’t move from their position, and their attacks are impaired as long as you play. They can repeat the Save each round, and once successful they can't suffer the effects anymore.
  • MASTER HAMLIN can teach you the Song of Merry:
A cheerful melody. Small animals, children, and even inanimate objects start dancing and following you if you wish.

CELESTIAL SCHOLARS
Cause: take control of your destiny

The scholars can teach you about the zodiac. These constellations influence all life on the planet. Each week, they can show you 2 zodiac constellations in the night sky: roll 2d12. One influences its aspects favorably, while the other influences its aspects unfavorably. The effects last a week and include but are not limited to:

  • die rerolls
  • improved or reduced consequences of Saves
  • automatic failures or successes

The stars always meddled with your plans, you just never realized.

If you roll a double, it means only the positive constellation is out. If you roll opposite constellations, it means the cosmos reached a perfect equilibrium. Anytime you would roll a Save, proceed as if the result was 10 instead. This situation can only last a day.
